Boston Red Sox Acquire Pitcher Sonny Gray

The Boston Red Sox have acquired veteran RHP Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for two pitching prospects the team announced Tuesday.

Heading back the other way are LHP Brandon Clarke, and RHP Richard Fitts. As part of the deal, Boston will acquire cash considerations to help offset the one year remaining on his 3 year, $75M contract. The 36 year old agreed to waive his no trade clause in order to complete the deal.

Gray posted a 14-8 record with a 4.28 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 180.2 IP in 2025. He also added 201 strikeouts, eclipsing the 200+ plateau for the second consecutive season. A 3x All-Star, Gray figures to play an innings eater role for the Red Sox in 2026, whose pitching staff was an area of weakness outside of Garrett Crochet last season.

Meanwhile, St. Louis will receive a 6’4″ fireballer in Clarke whose fastball can exceed 100mph. He spent the better part of this past season in Class A, striking out 60 batters across 38 innings, but also walking 27 in the process.

The 25 year old Fitts posted a 5.00 ERA for Boston in 2025, striking out 40 batters across 45 innings, but also giving up 11 home runs in the process. He figures to get an extended look in spring training for the Cardinals who continue to reshape their roster in an effort to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 MLB campaign.
