Avalanche Sign Martin Necas To 8 Year Extension

The Colorado Avalanche and forward Martin Necas have agreed to an 8 year, $92M contract extension which will carry an average annual value of $11.5M.

The deal will reportedly feature $60.4M worth of signing bonuses, and will keep him tied to the Avalanche through 2034 which will be his age 35 season. Originally drafted 12th overall by Carolina back in 2017, Necas has steadily blossomed into a high level offensive talent since joining the league.

In 2024-25, Necas split time between the Hurricanes and Avalanche, tallying 27 goals and 56 assists for 83 points across 79 contests. With a full summer and training camp now under his belt with the Avs, Necas has picked up right where he left off, accumulating 7G, 6A through 11 games played.

The 26 year old was set to become a free agent at seasons end as his 2 year, $13M contract will expire after the 2025-26 NHL campaign. Instead, President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic and GM Chris MacFarland have avoided a potential distraction by locking up their prized acquisition from last season early on.

Necas brings 66 playoff games worth experience to Colorado to go along with an AHL Calder Cup championship, and a Czech Extraliga championship from 2016. Internationally he’s one of the more decorated Czechian born players currently in the league having taken home gold at the 2024 IIHF world championship, and a gold at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Up next for Necas and the Avalanche is a 4pm ET date with the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday.
