San Antonio Spurs Give De’Aaron Fox Max Extension

Spurs Secure Star Guard De’Aaron Fox with Four-Year, $229M Extension

The San Antonio Spurs have locked in their franchise point guard, as De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $229M maximum contract extension on Monday. The deal, which includes no player option in the final season, will keep Fox in San Antonio through the 2029–30 NBA campaign.

The extension comes just months after Fox was acquired by the Spurs in a trade deadline move from the Sacramento Kings. Fox and his agent worked to facilitate the trade to his preferred destination and now have finalized a long-term agreement in a state with no income tax—an appealing contrast to his previous home in California.

The 27 year old made an immediate impact with the Spurs, averaging 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 appearances before undergoing season-ending surgery in March to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie. He had played through the injury, sustained during training camp, for much of the season. In total, Fox averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds over 62 games with both the Spurs and Kings last year.

Fox posted a 60-point performance on November 15th against the Minnesota Timberwolves, setting a Sacramento franchise record. He was one of just two NBA players last season—alongside Nikola Jokic—to score 60 in a single game.

Since entering the league in 2017, Fox has steadily elevated his game, joining rare company by averaging at least 20 points, five assists, and one steal per season over the last six years. Only Luka Doncic has matched that feat over the same span. Fox also joins an elite group—James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Jokic—as one of just four players to tally over 10,000 points, 3,000 assists, and 700 steals during that timeframe.

Now in San Antonio, Fox joins an exciting young core that includes 2023 No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama and 2025 No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper. The backcourt of Fox, Harper, and 2024 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle promises to give the Spurs a dynamic and versatile lineup for years to come.
