Vancouver Whitecaps Add Thomas Muller

Vancouver Whitecaps Add Thomas Muller

The Vancouver Whitecaps are putting the finishing touches on a deal that would bring former Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller to the west coast.

The Whitecaps currently have a deal in principle over Muller’s discovery rights with FC Cincinnati which will see the club send roughly $400,000 to Cincinnati as part of the move. According to reports, Muller will likely join the club in the coming days.

One of Germany’s most decorated players, the 35 year old has won 13 Bundesliga titles, 6 German Cups, 2 UCL titles, 2 Club World Cups, 2014 World Cup, and appeared in 756 games, notching 250 goals along the way. He also won the Golden Boot as the top scorer at the 2010 World Cup, and has been capped 131 times by Germany between 2010 and 2024.

While his pace of play may not exactly mesh with the squad Vancouver currently has assembled, his leadership and winning mentality will prove invaluable to the MLS side as they look to win their first league championship. The club has made the playoffs 7 times throughout their history, but have never advanced past the quarterfinals stage of the postseason.

With Vancouver currently sitting in 2nd place in the Western Conference at 13-6-5, evidently the Whitecaps front office felt as though their window to compete was wide open, and that the Weilheim native could be the missing piece to get them over the hump.

Muller originally joined the Bayern Academy program as an 11 year old in 2000 and was a fixture for the German powerhouse for years thereafter. According to reports, Muller’s signing will officially be announced on Friday, August 1st.
