Blue Jays Acquire Seranthony Dominguez

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday in exchange for RHP prospect Juaron Watts-Brown.

Dominguez was traded following game 1 of the team’s doubleheader, meaning he simply walked down the hall before suiting up for Toronto prior to first pitch of game 2.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays designated reliever Chad Green for assignment. Green has struggled with the long ball throughout much of the season, a trend that continued on Tuesday. Prior to the trade, he gave up four runs on two homers in one inning of work in Tuesday afternoon’s 16-4 loss to Baltimore.

Dominguez was previously acquired by the Orioles in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies at last year’s deadline and posted a 3.97 ERA across 25 relief appearances for Baltimore down the stretch. Currently 2-3 on the year, with a 3.24 ERA in 43 appearances, the 30 year old represents a significant upgrade for the Blue Jays bullpen which ranked 17th in the Majors with a 3.94 ERA prior to Tuesday’s meltdown.

Meanwhile, heading back the other way, Watts-Brown has split this season between Double-A New Hampshire and High-A Vancouver. He’s posted a 2-5 record with a 3.54 ERA across 19 starts. MLB.com currently lists him as Baltimore’s 8th best prospect in their system, with a projected timeline of 2026 to make his MLB debut.

Dominguez is now the 3rd reliever that Baltimore has traded in the lead up to Thursday’s MLB trade deadline, joining Gregory Soto and Bryan Baker. He also doesn’t figure to be the last as the Orioles still have a number of contracts they’re likely to move in the next 48 hours.
