The New Orleans Pelicans and forward Herb Jones have come to terms on a 3 year, $67.6M extension according to Jones’ agents.
In total, Jones now has a total of five years and $97M remaining on his Pelicans deal, with a newly added player option in 2029-30. Jones’ current contract will pay him roughly $13.9MM this season and $14.9MM in 2026-27. His new extension will begin in 2027-28 and will start at 140% of his previous salary, with 8% annual raises, for a total of $67.6M.
The former second round pick has become an integral part of the Pelicans future amidst continued uncertainty surrounding their current roster.
Named to the 2023-24 All NBA first defensive team, the 26 year old has seen his role with New Orleans grow year over year, resulting in a career high 32.4 minutes per contest last season. The 6’8″ defender averaged 10.3pts/3.9reb/3.3ast per game last season, but battled a variety of shoulder and labrum injuries along the way.
Only Jones, Trey Murphy and Zion Williamson have guaranteed contracts through at least 2027-28 on the New Orleans roster, though there are small handful of players with options for that season. That makes the next 2 campaigns pivotal for the Pelicans in terms of determining whether they’ll be hitting the reset button on their roster, or adding onto it to contend for a championship.
