Carolina Hurricanes Ink Nikolaj Ehlers To 6 Year Deal

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed free agent forward Nikolaj Ehlers to a 6 year, $51M contract the team announced on Thursday.

Ehlers, largely viewed as the top remaining free agent on the market, will earn $8.5M in terms of AAV per season. The 29 year old is coming off a 63 point (24G, 39A) season for the Winnipeg Jets, the club he’s spent his entire NHL career with to date.

“Nikolaj was the top free agent available on July 1, and we are proud that he’s chosen to make Carolina his home,” said Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky. “He’s a highly skilled winger who can really skate and will fit very well with our forward group.”

The Ehlers signing brings an end to a rocky patch along Carolina’s top line over the last few seasons, as the club has cycled through a variety of wingers without finding the right longterm fit. First it was Jake Guentzel in 2024 who left via free agency. Then it was Mikko Rantanen who had a cup of coffee in Raleigh before being flipped again to Dallas. And finally it was a failed Mitch Marner trade at this year’s deadline which never got across the finish line.

Finally the club appears to have solidified their top 6 heading into 2025-26 with Ehlers, Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Andrei Svechnikov, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jackson Blake in tow. Mix in contributions from wily veterans such as Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal, and promising youngsters like Logan Stankoven, and suddenly the Hurricanes lineup seems much more balanced than when they bowed out of this year’s playoff run.

Stankoven is freshly signed to an eight-year, $48 million contract extension tying him to the franchise for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Tulsky & Co. also acquired K’Andre Miller from the New York Rangers, and then signed him to an eight-year deal worth $7.5M per year.

All in all the Hurricanes have plenty to be optimistic about heading into the dog days of summer, as most of the heavy lifting for the offseason is now in the rearview mirror.
