Dallas Stars Re-Sign Matt Duchene

The Dallas Stars have re-signed forward Matt Duchene to a 4 year, $18M contract extension which will carry an average annual value of $4.5M.

Duchene will now be tied to the team through the 2028-29 NHL campaign, and avoids becoming a free agent on July 1st. Stars GM Jim Nill said “We are thrilled to have Matt back with our organization…As our team’s leading scorer last season, he helped to solidify our forward group while also providing invaluable leadership off the ice and in the community. The fit with Matt and our team has been seamless from the start, and we’re looking forward to continuing to pursue our shared goal of bringing a championship to Dallas.”

In his second season with the Stars, the 34 year old tallied a career high 52 assists to go along with 30 goals, making him a point per game player across 82 contests in 2024-25. He would go on to add a goal and 5 assists through 18 playoff games, as Dallas fell just short of reaching the Stanley Cup final this spring.

Duchene has represented Canada internationally at virtually every level of competition across his 17 year NHL career including the 2014 Winter Olympics, 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and 6 times at the IIHF World Championships. Originally selected 3rd overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the Haliburton, ON native has appeared in 1,138 NHL games, tallying 371 goals and 520 assists (891 points).

Across two seasons in Dallas, Duchene has amassed 147 points (55G, 92A) to rank second on the team during that period. With Duchene now locked up for the foreseeable future, the Stars front office will have an important decision to make regarding captain Jamie Benn who is also set to become a UFA on July 1st.
