Cale Makar Wins 2025 Norris Trophy

Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar has been named the 2025 James Norris Trophy winner for the 2024-25 NHL season.

Makar earned 176 out of a potential 191 first place votes, and 1,861 voting points overall. That was enough to get him past fellow finalists Zach Werenski (1,266 points) and Quinn Hughes (918 points) when all the votes were tallied.

“Any time you get recognized for something like this it’s very cool,” Makar said in a social media video. “It’s very special to be able to do this a second time…It’s truly a team award and we had a fun year, and it’ll hopefully be more fun continuing, but this one’s for them.”

The 26 year old registered 92 points (30G, 62A) across 80 games for the Avalanche this season, setting a franchise record in points from a blue liner along the way. Across his first 6 NHL seasons, Makar has been nominated for the Norris Trophy 5 times, winning it twice.

He and Erik Karlsson are currently the only active NHL defencemen with multiple Norris Trophy wins on their resumes.

The Calgary native set career highs in power-play goals (12), short-handed goals (two) and shots on goal (246) while averaging 25:43 of ice time per game this season, good for third highest in the league.
