Longtime Real Madrid defender Marcelo has announced his retirement from professional soccer at the age of 36 in a video he posted to social media on Thursday.
“One of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history, and we had the privilege of watching him for a long time,” Madrid’s longtime president Florentino Pérez said of the news. “He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and always will be his home.”
A 5 time Champions League winner, Marcelo enjoyed one of the most trophy laden careers in all of soccer over the course of 19 years as a professional. He won 6x LaLiga titles, and also helped Fluminense win the Copa Libertadores in 2023 in his home country of Brazil.
Marcelo enjoyed 15+ seasons with Real Madrid, joining the club as an 18 year old, ultimately playing 546 games for Los Blancos across all competitions. He also suited up for 58 contests representing Brazil internationally, claiming an Olympic Silver and Bronze medal, as well as a 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Vinicius Jr. took to Instagram following the announcement to say “I miss your dribbles, goals, and assists… A forward who played as a defender. Thank you for everything. You are a warrior!”
Former teammates, coaches, and opponents all took time to pour on the accolades for the Rio de Janeiro born left-back. Marcelo alluded to “not being done” with soccer, leading many to believe that he will take on a front office or scouting role with a club in the coming months.
For the time being however, he will take some time off to spend with his family and his two sons Enzo and Liam.
