Capitals Sign Logan Thompson To 6 Year Extension

The Washington Capitals and goaltender Logan Thompson have come to terms on a 6 year, $35.1M contract extension on Monday. The new deal will feature a $5.85M AAV, and prevents Thompson from hitting free agency at season’s end.

The 27 year old net minder joined Washington after spending parts of 4 seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights organization. In 2023-24, Thompson posted a 25-14-5 record with a 2.70 GAA and .908 SV%. However, since heading out to DC, he’s been lights out, turning in a 22-2-3 record, with a 2.09 GAA and .925 SV%.

Those numbers, alongside Washington’s strong play, have vaulted him into the Vezina conversation, and netted him a large pay day. The 6’4″ goaltender was playing in the final season of a deal which saw him earn an AAV of $766,667 per year.

A product of the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings, Thompson also saw stops in the ECHL and AHL before signing with the Golden Knights in 2020 as an undrafted free agent.

The Capitals now face a decision with regard to Thompson’s partner, Charlie Lindgren, who is set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer.

Washington is next in action on Tuesday night as they travel Calgary to take on the Flames in a 9pm ET showdown.
