Giants Sign Justin Verlander To 1 Year Deal

The San Francisco Giants have come to terms on a 1 year, $15M deal with free agent pitcher Justin Verlander, pending a physical.

Verlander, who will turn 42 next month, is a 9x All-Star and 3x Cy Young award winning pitcher who will bring some veteran leadership to the Giants rotation. San Francisco was deep into negotiations with Corbin Burnes, who ultimately opted to signed with the Diamondbacks this offseason.

Instead of throwing a mountain of cash at some of the remaining free agent arms, the Giants opted go with a 1 year deal with a known commodity in Verlander, and will likely wait until next offseason to target a long term solution for their starting rotation. The former AL MVP will pair alongside Logan Webb and Robbie Ray in the middle of the club’s rotation to start the year.

The deal continues a relatively quiet offseason for San Francisco this year. The only other free agent they’ve added to date is Willy Adames who the club gave a 7 year deal to last month. With holes at 1st base, DH and the outfield, the Giants are very much still in the market for another impact bat.

Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, and Anthony Santander are some of the names the club has been linked to over the past few weeks. They’re also still in the mix for free agent pitcher Roki Sasaki from Japan as well as new president of baseball operations Buster Posey looks to retool his roster following a disappointing 80-82 campaign in 2024.
