Decimated by injuries at the wide receiver position, the Houston Texans have claimed veteran wide out Diontae Johnson off waivers.
Already without WR Stefon Diggs due to a season ending knee injury suffered earlier in the season, Houston’s wide receiving corps grew even thinner this past weekend after Tank Dell suffered a season ending knee injury of his own. The 25 year old had to be carted off in the team’s loss agains the Kansas City Chiefs after suffering an ACL tear, a dislocated knee cap, and additional ligament damage.
That left the team with Nico Collins, Robert Woods, and John Metchie III as their remaining healthy receivers, though Collins had previously missed time due to injuries of his own in 2024. In adding Johnson to the group, they have a proven pass catcher at the NFL level as an insurance policy for their playoff run.
Johnson was waived by the Baltimore Ravens on Friday after internal frustrations regarding his usage began to surface. According to reports, the Los Angeles Chargers also put in a waiver claim for the former Steeler, though Houston had a higher priority spot on the list.
All in all, the veteran wideout’s time in Baltimore came to a close after playing only 39 snaps for the team, and catching 1 pass for 6 yards. At his peak in 2021 with Pittsburgh, Johnson caught 107 passes for 1,161 yards and 8 TDs.
Ironically, Johnson’s first chance to suit up for his new team will come against his former team on Christmas Day as the Houston Texans take on the Baltimore Ravens.
