A’ja Wilson’s historic season added another chapter on Wednesday night, as the Aces’ star broke the single season WNBA scoring record in her team’s 86-75 victory over the Indiana Fever.
Wilson, who finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists, set the new record just before halftime, eclipsing Jewell Loyd’s 939 mark from last season.
In typical A’ja fashion, the 28 year old downplayed the feat in her postgame comments to reports. “Feels great, ’cause now people will stop talking about it…I felt like it was just lingering, lingering, lingering, so I’m glad that we got it done. It’s been a lot of fun.”
A two-time league MVP, Wilson now sits at 956 points on the year, and could become the first player in WNBA history to reach the 1,000 point plateau in a single season. And with 4 games remaining on the Aces schedule, the All-World forward seems poised to do just that.
“I don’t want to sound cliché when I say this but, I don’t get any of that without every single teammate along the way. I’m so grateful to be able to play with selfless women,” Wilson added. “My teammates are the heartbeat. They keep me going. I don’t get any points without them passing me the basketball.
“So the points are great. They’re always going to be there. I’m never going to stop shooting, but the group that we have in this locker room is something that I’m truly so happy to be around.”
In what’s been an up and down season for the defending champions, the South Carolina native has been a steadying factor as her play on both ends of the court has helped Las Vegas weather their early season woes. Currently the MVP front runner by a comfortable margin, the only question now is whether she’ll earn unanimous honours, or whether she’ll have to settle for a “mere” run away victory for her 3rd such accolade.
