The New York Yankees added another impact bat to their lineup late Saturday evening, acquiring Jaxx Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins in exchange for 3 prospects.
New York, who currently sit 1 game back of the AL East leading Baltimore Orioles, will benefit from adding the speed of Chisholm to their lineup. Outside of Anthony Volpe, no Yankees player has more than 5 stolen bags on the season, with Aaron Judge and Juan Soto occupying 2nd place on that list with five apiece. And needless to say, if New York’s front office can risking their franchise stars injuring themselves on the base paths, that’s a win in and of itself.
The 26 year old’s positional versatility is another appealing aspect of the deal for the Yankees brass, as Chisholm has spent time at the major league level at shortstop, 2nd base, and in the outfield. With the injury bug’s propensity to rear its ugly head down the homestretch of the season, having a “plug and play” style solution on your roster is a win for Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
Currently hitting .249, with 46 runs, 50 RBIs, 13 HRs, and 22 stolen bases on the season for the Marlins, Chisholm is a solid addition to the club’s lineup. An addition they paid a steep price to acquire, but also managed to avoid giving up star prospects Jasson Dominguez or Spencer Jones.
Heading back the other way is infielder Jared Serna (19th ranked prospect), catcher Agustin Ramirez (20th ranked prospect), and shortstop Abrahan Ramirez.
Despite not having much playoff success over the past two decades (only 2 postseason appearances since 2003), Miami currently features a fairly depleted farm system. Clearly the team’s front office was looking to replenish their minor league ranks with impact bats, and to that extent they accomplished just that.
Earlier this week they acquired Diamondbacks prospect Deyvison De Los Santos who currently leads all minor leaguers with 28 HRs on the year. And now with their latest deal, they acquire one of the fastest rising catching prospects in the game in Ramirez from New York.
The 22 year old righty was recently promoted from Double-A to Triple-A, and features the 2nd most home runs on the year amongst minor league catchers (20). Per MLB Pipeline, he projects to be MLB ready in 2026. However, that timeline could be accelerated based on how thin Miami is behind the plate at all levels of their organization.
Serna is a right handed infielder who has seen action across the left side of the diamond with reps at 3rd, SS, and 2B. In 88 games at Hudson Valley (New York’s High-A class affiliate), he’s hit .253 with 13 home runes, 11 stolen bases, 58 RBIs and 51 runs scored.
And finally Abrahan Ramirez won’t feature for Miami anytime soon, but is an intriguing prospect nevertheless. The 19 year old Venezuelan has hit .348 across 49 games in Rookie Ball, and has drawn some comparisons to fellow countryman Jose Altuve in certain baseball circles.
While his power has yet to develop, the sweet swinging infielder is at a minimum a development project which could yield results down the line.
