The Houston Texans announced Tuesday that they had agreed to a 3 year, $72.75M contract extension with wide receiver Nico Collins.
The deal, which features $52M in guaranteed money, will have a maximum value of $75M if all incentive levels are reached over the lifetime of the deal. Collins is coming off a breakout season with rookie QB C.J. Stroud in which he hauled in 80 passes for 1,297 yards and 8 TDs.
By giving the 25 year old a new big money contract, it shows the level of faith Houston’s front office has in the former Michigan wideout, even with an increasingly crowded WR room. Earlier this offseason, the club traded for former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and already featured Tank Dell and John Metchie III.
“We want to put defenses in binds, and I think with those three guys it allows us to do that because they are so different, and they can all do different things,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said during his team’s OTA’s. “But at the end of the day, they are all explosive finishers with the football, and that is what makes those guys great players. They can win on third down and they can finish and get in the end zone, and that’s what we look for at all skill positions on offense.”
After three dismal years in which the club won 10 games combined, Houston went 10-7 in 2023, winning the AFC South and subsequently defeating the Cleveland Browns in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
With veteran additions such as the aforementioned Diggs, and former Bengals RB Joe Mixon, the club now hopes to build on last season’s success and make a deep postseason run in 2024.
