The quarterback carousel for the New York Jets continues as head coach Robert Saleh announced Friday that Trevor Siemian will be under centre Sunday against the Washington Commanders.
With Zach Wilson ruled out due to a concussion, Siemian will become the club’s 4th QB to start a game this season when he takes the field this weekend. In his last outing in Week 15 against Miami, the veteran QB threw for 110 yards, 2 INT, took 2 sacks, and posted a 32.5 rating in his team’s 30-0 loss.
“Super grateful,” said Siemian. “At this point in my career especially, any chance I get to play is awesome.” The former Northwestern standout hasn’t won an NFL start in 6 years, dating back to 2017 when he was a member of the Denver Broncos.
Originally signed to the Jets practice squad on September 26th, Siemian was expected to provide some depth at the quarterback position for the Jets after losing starter Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles tendon. However, a slew of injuries, and inconsistent play has led to the 31 year old getting the nod for Week 16.
OT Duane Brown is currently questionable with a back injury, while OT’s Mekhi Becton (knee/shoulder), Carter Warren (hip), and Max Mitchell (neck) are all dealing with injuries of their own at the moment as well.
Brett Rypien is in line to serve as the team’s backup quarterback should he be required, as the 5-9 Jets’ season can’t seem to end soon enough.
