Los Angeles Rams Sign QB Carson Wentz

The Los Angeles Rams made a significant move in response to quarterback Matthew Stafford’s injury, signing veteran QB Carson Wentz to bolster their roster. The strategic acquisition occurred during the Rams’ bye week, allowing Wentz valuable time to familiarize himself with the intricacies of the Los Angeles offensive system.

Stafford suffered a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb during the Rams’ eighth-week clash against the Dallas Cowboys. As a result, he was sidelined for the subsequent match against the Green Bay Packers. In Stafford’s absence, Brett Rypien was elevated to starting duties. However, Rypien’s performance in the Week 9 fixture was less than stellar, managing to complete only 46.4% of his passes, accumulating a mere 130 yards, and struggling to keep the Rams offense on the field.

Wentz, who had previously played for the Washington Commanders during the 2022 season, encountered an unexpected turn when he was released in February, despite having two years remaining on his existing contract. His departure from Washington originated from a prior trade deal involving the exchange of two third-round picks to the Colts in 2022, along with a swap of second-round picks as well.

Wentz’s football journey dates back to the 2016 NFL Draft, where he was initially drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles as the second overall pick. This was the same draft year in which the Rams orchestrated a trade, securing the first overall pick to select Jared Goff. Wentz’s tenure with the Eagles fizzled out during the 2021 offseason, as he relinquished his starting position to Jalen Hurts, subsequently leading to his trade from Philadelphia.

Over the course of his 7 year NFL career, the 6’5″ signal caller has suited up for 93 games, and thrown for 22,129 yards, 151TDs, and 66INTs.

The Rams’ decision to enlist Wentz as a backup to Stafford during this critical juncture not only signifies a proactive approach to handling the current quarterback injury but also presents an opportunity for Wentz to potentially contribute to the team’s performance. His experience, despite recent challenges, remains a valuable asset that could prove instrumental for the Rams as they navigate the remainder of the season.

Los Angeles is next in action at home against the Seattle Seahawks on November 19th as they hope that the bye week will allow for Stafford to continue to recover, and Wentz to get acquainted to his new surroundings.
