Wentz & Nelson Updates

Indianapolis Colts fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Per ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, both Wentz and Guard Quenton Nelson appear to be on track to rejoin the team in time for week 1 of the 2021 season. The Colts are scheduled to host the Seattle Seahawks on September 12th at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Both Wentz & Nelson are currently recovering from foot surgeries conducted on Aug 2nd and 3rd respectively, and were initially labelled as being sidelined 5-12 weeks. Evidently their recoveries will be on the shorter end of that timeline as Wentz was spotted at Colts’ practice without a boot or noticeable limp on Tuesday.

Wentz is in his first season in Indianapolis after a largely forgettable final year in Philadelphia. The Eagles ironically may be rooting for Wentz more than one would think this year as their conditional 2nd round pick from the Colts in 2022 becomes a 1st if Wentz takes 75% or more of the team’s offensive snaps. Nelson is a 3x All Pro since being selected 6th overall in the 2018 NFL draft and is a huge part of the Colts offense.

Injuries had become a concern of late in Colts training camp as not only were Wentz and Nelson sidelined, but also C Ryan Kelly, LB Darius Leonard, DT DeForest Buckner, and most recently DE Kwity Paye whom the Colts took in the 1st round of this year’s draft. Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger will now be competing for the Colts backup QB role for the remainder of camp.
