Myles Turner and the Indiana Pacers have come to terms on a 2 year/$60M contract extension on Saturday.
Turner will also receive an additional $17.1M renegotiation on his current 2022-23 salary as part of the deal.
The 6’11” Center had been linked to a variety of trade rumours over the last year, including several that would see him head out west to join the Lakers. With the extension however, it ends speculation that he could be dealt ahead of the February 9th trade deadline. It also removes one of the top big men from the impending free agent market this summer as well.
Indiana currently sit in 9th place in the Eastern Conference with a 24-27 record. The club entered the season expecting to kickstart a rebuild, however with the emergence of Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin, the front office has opted to change course and begin strengthening the roster around their young core.
Turner, 26, is currently producing a career best 17.5pts per game, to go along with personal bests in FG% (54.4%), rebounds (7.9), and 3P% (39.1%).
Prior to the signing, the Pacers had the 2nd most cap space in the league trailing only the San Antonio Spurs. This financial flexibility is what allowed them to renegotiate Turner’s current deal under the new CBA, something that had happened only once prior to this when the Clippers and Robert Covington came to terms on a reworked contract.
Indiana is next in action against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday at 6pm ET.
