We might be in a recession, but that hasn’t stopped collectors from shelling out record sums of money for rare cards on the secondary market.
The latest eye popping figure was $1.7M shelled out to acquire a 2020 Joe Burrow Rookie Panini National Treasures Platinum NFL Shield. The 1/1 card features an on card autograph and sports a 9.5 Gem Mint grade from Beckett to go alongside a perfect 10 grade for the autograph itself.
The $1.7M price tag is a record for a card featuring Joe Burrow as he becomes the latest QB to crack the 7 figure plateau. The buyer, who chose to remain anonymous, completed the deal as part of a private sale on September 12th, which recently became official.
Similar RPA’s of Burrow featuring Bengals patches have fetched sums ranging from $75k-$336K via prominent auction houses. However the NFL Shield, often considered the “Holy Grail” of rookie cards, generated considerably more interest, especially after receiving a virtually flawless grade.
Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals currently sit at 4-3 on the season and are next in action against the Cleveland Browns on Monday October 31st.
