The St. Louis Cardinals are set to name Rob Cerfolio as the club’s newest GM according to reports on Friday. Cerfolio, who has been an assistant GM with the club since 2024, is expected to assume the role following Randy Flores’ departure to join the Astros organization last week.
A 34 year old graduate of Yale, Cerfolio will continue to work under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, but more importantly for the Cardinals, they’ll keep him in the organization. The former Bulldog pitcher was viewed by many in MLB circles as a rising star, and had previously been linked to openings with the Athletics, and others around the league.
The young executive was part of a group that oversaw the Cardinals youth movement this season which reaped the benefits of breakout campaigns from the likes of Jordan Walker, JJ Wetherholt, Joshua Baez and Leo Bernal. As a result, what was largely expected to be a “rebuild” season, saw the club go 77-85 and flirt with a wildcard spot before tapering off towards the end of the year.
While St. Louis has yet to publicly announce any terms or pay related information regarding the role, insiders expect the new contract to run parallel to that of Bloom’s. By linking the two together, it would lock up the club’s top two positions through 2030 and create some organizational stability for the franchise.
Prior to joining St. Louis in 2024, Cerfolio held multiple roles with the Cleveland Guardians from 2015-2024, eventually working his way up to director of player development.
