The New York Islanders have signed free agent defenceman Logan Stanley to a 1 year deal in an effort to add some depth to their blue line prior to their season opener.
The 28 year old set career highs in goals (9), assists (17) and points (26) after being dealt to the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline last season. A defensive minded blue liner, the 6’7″ Stanley figures to add some veteran grit to the Islanders back end as a likely bottom pairing defender.
Originally a 1st round selection of the Winnipeg Jets (18th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft, Stanley has 62 career points (14 goals, 48 assists) and a plus-29 rating across 278 career NHL games. He’s also added four points (two goals, two assists) in 25 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.
While the club has yet to confirm financial details of the contract, insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that it’s a 1 year deal valued at $1.5M. The pact ends what had become a prolonged free agency period for the towering defender after an uneven stint with the Sabres down the homestretch.
Stanley now figures to be slotted in alongside Scott Mayfield to begin the season. In a corresponding move, the club has assigned 2025 1st round pick Kashawn Aitcheson and 22 year old Isaiah George back to the minors.
New York wrapped up their preseason schedule against the Devils on Saturday, and will now turn their attention to their 2026-27 season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 30th.
