The Dallas Wings are taking the next step in their highly anticipated move to the downtown Dallas area in 2027. The club announced on Monday that the team will play all of their home games at the American Airlines Center beginning next season.
The AAC is a 20,000 seat stadium that’s currently home to the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and is a massive upgrade in terms of amenities and capacity from the team’s current home in North Texas. The Wings have been playing out of College Park Center on the University of Texas at Arlington campus since 2016.
The facility is located roughly 20 miles outside of Dallas, and has a capacity of just 6,251 seats. While the move is a positive step forward, and a reflection of the massive growth of the WNBA over the last several seasons, it will only be a temporary fix for the Wings.
The franchise signed a 15 year agreement with the city of Dallas to move into the Dallas Memorial Auditorium which has a 10,000 seat capacity back in 2024. Unfortunately, there have been a series of delays to the renovations of the facility which will necessitate another season worth of construction to bring it up to code.
Because of the delays, the Wings needed to find a bandaid solution to their capacity problem as they’ve sold out their full-season ticket packages for the last 3 seasons, and high-profile individual games have needed to be moved to the AAC in order to accommodate demand on several occasions already.
“Today’s announcement marks a pivotal step in the team’s relocation to Dallas as well as our continued growth as a professional sports enterprise,” Dallas Wings CEO and managing partner Greg Bibb said.
While players and fans alike will need to wait a bit longer for their official move to their new home, the team confirmed on Monday that the club will be able to move into their new $81M training facility next April. That timeline puts them on track to begin their 2027 training camp in the new state of the art building.
“We believe strongly the practice facility will provide our world-class athletes with what they need and deserve to compete at the highest level while delivering real benefit to the citizens of Dallas, especially the residents of Far West Oak Cliff,” Bibb said.
