Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage is headed to the 15-day injured list as a result of knee inflammation the team announced on Wednesday.
Yesavage appeared to tweak something in his start on Tuesday against the Houston Astros as he was warming up for the start of the 3rd inning. Prior to the bottom half of the 3rd inning, the 23 year old’s knee seemed to buckle while he was getting loose, prompting a visit from the medical staff. After trying to throw one more pitch, manager John Schneider made the call to pull him to prevent further injury.
Schneider would tell reporters after the game that the hard throwing righty was feeling a “pinching sensation” which was affecting his balance.
The 2024 first round pick is currently sporting a 5-5 record with a 3.65 ERA along with 91Ks across 93.2IP in 2026. It’s a significant blow to a Toronto team that came agonizingly close to winning the World Series last fall, and now finds itself in the midst of a retool on the fly following the MLB trade deadline.
The Jays would go on to lose the game 7-2, dropping them to 53-61 on the season. While they’re far from eliminated from postseason contention, currently sitting just 4 games back of the Guardians for the final AL wildcard spot, the club will need to turn things around in a hurry if they hope to reach the playoffs again this season.
Toronto will also need some help from their opponents as well as Seattle, Detroit, Baltimore, Texas and Minnesota all currently stand between them and Cleveland in the race for the postseason.
In a series of corresponding moves, Toronto optioned RHP Chad Dallas to Triple-A, while recalling RHPs Lazaro Estrada and Chase Lee on Wednesday. Both Estrada and Lee will be active as the Jays continue their series against the Astros.
