A 2018 Bowman Chrome Superfractor rookie card of Shohei Ohtani has sold for $3.365M via Fanatics Collect’s private sales network. The figure sets a new record for any Ohtani baseball card, and is the third most expensive modern era card sale of all time.
While the figure falls well below the $5.2M Aaron Judge 1 of 1 superfractor, it eclipsed the record for an Ohtani card which was previously held by the 1 of 1 2025 Topps Chrome Gold Logo that fetched $3M.
This particular card is graded a 9.5 (Gem Mint) by Beckett, but features no autograph or game used memorabilia. It features a 9 for entering, 10 for edges, 9.5 for corners, and 10 for surface and is the batting variation of the rookie card.
The sale is the 14th publicly released transaction for a sports card that has gone for over $3M this year alone. While the hobby itself has seen massive devaluations of cards from their peak during the pandemic, the market for high end, low population cards remains as strong as ever.
The 2018 Bowman Chrome series continues to maintain its value in the collecting community as even ungraded, non-superfractor versions of Ohtani rookie cards from the set regularly sell in the $2000 price range. All in all, there have now been five different Ohtani cards which have brought in more than $1M via auction or private sale to date.
