The Boston Red Sox have fired manager Alex Cora following a 10-17 start to the season which has them sitting in last place in the AL East. In addition to Cora, the club also announced they were relieving hitting coach Peter Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin of their roles as well.
Game planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek has been reassigned to a new role within the organization per the team.
“Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude,” said Red Sox principal owner John Henry. “He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived.”
“I want to thank Alex, our coaches, and their families for everything they have given to this organization. They have been part of this club in a way that goes beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude.”
Boston is fresh off a 3 game sweep at the hands of the Yankees to fall 7.5 games back of their arch rivals for the division lead. They bounced back with a resounding 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, but that wasn’t enough to change the opinions of the team’s front office regarding the need for a major shake up.
The Red Sox won 89 games in 2025 as the team returned to the postseason for the first time in four years. But multiple early season losing streaks dug the BoSox a hole which they’ve struggled to climb out of to date.
In Cora’s place, 40 year old manager Chad Tracy was named interim manager of Boston. Tracy has managed Triple-A Worcester since the start of the 2022 season following a minor league career of his own.
Boston is next in action against the Orioles on Sunday at 1:35pm ET.
