Eagles Acquire QB Andy Dalton From Panthers

Another day, another trade in the NFL as one of the busiest offseasons in recent memory rolls along. Wednesday saw the Philadelphia Eagles acquire veteran quarterback Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2027 seventh round pick.

The deal will save Carolina $2.1M in salary cap space, and $4M in cash when all is said and done.

Dalton joins a quarterback room that already includes starter Jalen Hurts, as well as backup Tanner McKee. McKee threw for 274 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT in his lone start last season, and reportedly drew interest from several teams around the league during the offseason.

In a bit of “shuffling the deck chairs around”, Carolina signed former Eagles backup QB Kenny Pickett to a 1 year deal worth up to $7.5M last week. Panthers GM Dan Morgan had previously mentioned that the team wanted to develop a young QB behind current starter Bryce Young. A trait that, unfortunately, 38 year old veteran Andy Dalton doesn’t possess.

During his 3 seasons in Carolina, Dalton went 1-6 and was sacked 7 times in a 40-9 loss to Buffalo last year. With his best years clearly behind him, the 3x Pro Bowler figures to serve as a mentor to McKee, and provide some scout team reps for Philadelphia later this year.

Over the course of his 15 year NFL career, Dalton has thrown for 39,793 yards with 254 touchdowns and 151 interceptions. After being drafted 35th overall by the Bengals back in 2011, he spent time with the Cowboys, Bears, Saints and Panthers prior to Wednesday’s deal.
