Patrick Reed Announces Upcoming Return To PGA Tour

Add another high profile name to the list of LIV golfers who will be making their return to the PGA Tour. 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed announced Wednesday that he plans to rejoin the PGA ranks later this year, and will no longer compete on the LIV Golf Tour.

The 35 year old took to social media to make the announcement, posting:

“After careful thought and consideration, my family and I have decided that I will no longer compete on the LIV Golf Tour.”

“I am excited to announce that I am returning to the PGA TOUR as a past champion member for the 2027 season and am eligible to begin competing in PGA TOUR events later this year. I will continue to compete and play as an Honorary Lifetime Member on the DP World Tour, which is something that I am truly honored and excited to do.”

“I’m a traditionalist at heart, and I was born to play on the PGA TOUR, which is where my story began with my wife, Justine. I am very fortunate for the opportunities that have come my way and grateful for the life we have created.”

“I am moving forward in my career, and I look forward to competing on the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour. I can’t wait to get back out there and revisit some of the best places on earth.”

“I want to thank everyone involved for helping me make this decision. Over the last four years, I have learned a lot about myself, about who I am and who I am not, and for that I am forever grateful. To Dustin Johnson, The Aces, and LIV Golf, I want to thank you for the memories we shared and created together.”

“To golf fans around the world, I just want to thank you all for your continued support over the years. I just ask that you respect the decision we have made for our family, our children, and our future. Thank you for your continued support.”

When asked for comment, a PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed that Reed will be eligible to return to competition on tour as of August 25th. That timeline would make Reed eligible to compete in FedEx Cup fall events. As part of Reed’s agreement to come back, he will forfeit player equity in PGA Tour Enterprises through 2030.

For their part, LIV Golf issued a statement of their own shortly afterwards:

Currently ranked 29th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Reed’s departure is another major blow to LIV Golf following Brooks Koepka’s announcement that he would be returning to the PGA Tour a few weeks prior. LIV attempted to circle the wagons shortly thereafter, announcing a new multi-year contract extension for Dustin Johnson.

It’s not immediately clear who will replace Reed on the 4Aces team for the upcoming LIV season. With their new year set to kick off on February 4th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, it leaves little time for the rival tour to find a suitable replacement for the former Major champion.

For his part, Koepka will make his first PGA start at this week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, while Reed will take part in the Bahrain Championship on the DP World Tour.
