Grayson Rodriguez Traded To Angels For Taylor Ward

The Baltimore Orioles are sending pitcher Grayson Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielder Taylor Ward the clubs confirmed late Tuesday night.

LA had a clear need for starting pitching, and were happy to bet on Rodriguez returning to form following an injury plagued 2025 MLB campaign. Once considered a top prospect, Gray-Rod went 13-4 with a 3.86 ERA and 130 Ks across 116.2 IP in 2024.

The talented 26 year old began the season on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation that flared up in Spring Training. He then had a rehab outing canceled in April because of a strained lat muscle. Ultimately the team opted to shut him down in July as Rodriguez continued to feel elbow discomfort, before undergoing surgery to correct the issue shortly thereafter.

The right hander is expected to be ready for Spring Training in 2026 and, more importantly for the Angles, remains under team control through the 2029 season. He’ll join a current rotation of Yusei Kikuchi, Jose Soriano, and Reid Detmers on the West Coast.

Meanwhile, Ward adds an impact bat to the Orioles lineup, and is coming off the best statistical season of his career. The soon to be 32 year old hit 36 home runs, and drove in 103 runs, while scoring 86 times himself. While he won’t be mistaken for Tony Gwynn anytime soon (Ward hit .228 in 2025 and is a career .247 hitter), he’ll add some pop to an Orioles roster which scored the fewest runs of any AL East team last season.

Ward is expected to join Colton Cowser and Tyler O’Neill in the outfield, and can become a free agent following the 2026 MLB campaign.

With Mike Trout, Jo Adell, and Jorge Soler already on the roster, moving on from Ward to address a team area of need seemed like a no brainer for LA. That being said, they still have a need for outfield help at the centre field position, unless they plan to deploy Bryce Teodosio, Kyren Paris or top prospect Nelson Rada there next year.

Baltimore has been linked to several high profile free agent pitchers since the season ended, and it appears as though they’ll be even more aggressive in acquiring front line starter help with Rodriguez’s departure.

Dylan Cease, Framber Valdez, and Ranger Suarez are some of the names that have made the rounds as potential targets for the O’s this winter.
