49ers Lose Fred Warner To Season Ending Injury

49ers Linebacker Fred Warner Suffers Season-Ending Ankle Injury in Loss to Buccaneers

The San Francisco 49ers suffered yet another devastating injury on Sunday when All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner sustained a dislocated right ankle during the team’s 30–19 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Warner, will be forced to undergo season-ending surgery, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed postgame.

The injury occurred with just under eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. On a routine first-and-10 play from Tampa Bay’s 36-yard line, running back Rachaad White cut inside, colliding with 49ers safety Ji’Ayir Brown, whose legs inadvertently rolled into the back of Warner’s ankle. Warner immediately went down in visible pain as teammates and coaches rushed to his side.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings described feeling “sick to his stomach” watching his teammate depart, while left tackle Trent Williams called it “heartbreaking”.

Despite the emotional setback, second-year linebacker Tatum Bethune stepped in admirably, leading the team with 10 tackles. Shanahan indicated that Bethune, a 2024 seventh-round draft pick, will get the first opportunity to replace Warner moving forward.

The loss of Warner compounds an already difficult season for San Francisco’s defence, which is also without star defensive end Nick Bosa (torn ACL) and several key offensive contributors, including George Kittle, Brock Purdy, and Brandon Aiyuk.

Warner, who has missed only one game due to injury throughout his seven-year career, was on the verge of breaking Hall of Famer Patrick Willis’ franchise record for career tackles. He entered Sunday’s game needing five tackles to surpass the mark and had already notched one at the time of his injury.

Players and coaches across the league expressed support for Warner following the game. Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield opened his postgame remarks by offering prayers for Warner, while Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles added, “He’s one of the best players in the league and an incredible person. You hate to see that happen. It breaks your heart.”

San Francisco will now prepare to host the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday, but could be on the cusp of getting back some of their offensive pieces if Purdy & Kittle can get in some practices throughout the week.
