English side Liverpool have completed a British record setting acquisition of Alexander Isak, bringing in the striker from Newcastle United on a £130M bid which is currently pending a physical.
Isak has spent the better part of the summer angling for a move away from Newcastle, and now the 25 year old gets his wish, joining the reigning Premier League champions. The Swedish international did not join Newcastle for their Asian tour, and had yet to feature for his club in any matches thus far in 2025-26.
Once finalized, the deal will become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, eclipsing Chelsea’s acquisition of Moises Caicedo back in 2023. Liverpool hasn’t been shy about writing cheques this offseason, having previously shelled out over £100M to acquire Florian Wirtz back in June.
With the massive signings, Liverpool becomes just the 2nd Premier League club to spend £400M in a single summer, joining Chelsea in that rarified realm. However it hasn’t all been additions, the Reds have also had to weather the departures of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyler Morton and Ben Doak. The club has managed to recoup an initial amount of roughly £190M to help offset their lavish signings as a result.
Isak’s departure has been a move Newcastle fans have been bracing for, for some time now. Between him not featuring in any preseason action, and his recent social media allegations of “broken promises”, it was evident that the fractured relationship between club and player wouldn’t be salvaged.
As a result, the Magpies made a club-record signing of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for up to £69M, paving the way for the sale of Isak to Liverpool. Initial reports indicate that the club originally sought £150M in compensation for the striker, however that stance softened as deadline day approached.
Newcastle are also in the midst of trying to sign a striker to replace Callum Wilson, who left via free transfer following the expiry of his contract at the end of last season. Reports out of London say that the club have agreed to a £55M deal for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.
Liverpool is next in action on Sunday, September 14th against Burnley, with the expectation that Isak will be ready to make his Reds debut.
