Triston Casas placed on IL with ruptured patellar tendon

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas has been placed on the 10 day injured list following a second inning injury suffered Friday night vs. Minnesota.

Casas had to be helped off the field on a stretcher following a rather innocent looking play down the first baseline. Upon closer review however, it appears as though the 25 year old make contact with Twins infielder Ty France’s foot, causing him to land awkwardly on his left knee.

“It seems like he was in shock, to be honest to you,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters. “He said right away that he didn’t feel it. It’s tough. He works so hard and we want him on the field. That was a hustle play, too, and that happened.”

While he may have been placed on the 10 day IL, Cora did call the injury “significant” so there’s a chance that Casas could be out of action for the foreseeable future. The 6’4″ left handed bat missed all but 63 games in 2024 due to a ribcage injury.

Since making his Major League debut in 2022, Casas has battled injuries and inconsistency at the MLB level, preventing the former 26th overall pick from the 2018 draft from reaching his full potential. Casas signed a 1 year, $774,000 fully guaranteed contract with the Boston Red Sox for 2025 and will be arbitration eligible next year.

That being said, if he misses another significant amount of time this season, that won’t bode well for his next potential deal. Across 816 career MLB at bats, the American slugger has hit 45 home runs, and driven in 120 runs while hitting .241. Casas had gotten off to a slow start in 2025 with 3 home runs, 11 RBIs and a .182 batting average.

The Red Sox reinstated LHP Brennan Bernardino from the bereavement list, and activated infielder Abraham Toro from Triple-A Worcester. In a corresponding move, they then optioned RHP Luis Guerrero to Worcester.

Boston continues their series with Minnesota on Saturday in a 4:10pm ET showdown.
