Mike Trout’s run of injury woes continues as the Los Angeles Angels have placed the star outfielder on the 10-day IL with a bone bruise in his left knee.
Trout didn’t suit up on Thursday after departing Wednesday’s contest with what the team labelled knee soreness after attempting to beat out a ground ball. The injury is the latest setback in Trout’s ongoing battle to remain on the field.
Limited to just 29 games in 2024 after tearing the meniscus in his left knee twice, the 33 year old has logged 53, 36, 119, 82, 29, and 29 (to date) games played since winning the AL MVP in 2019. A career .297/.408/.579 hitter with 387 homers, 214 stolen bases, 85.8 bWAR and 85.7 fWAR over the course of his 15-year major league career, Trout is undoubtedly an impact player when healthy. However his runs of health have come few and far between since the 2020’s began.
While manager Ron Washington hinted that he doesn’t believe Trout will miss much time, a “bone bruise” is a general term which can mean anything from a minor injury, up to a small bone fracture, which puts Trout’s return to MLB action up the air at best.
In house options to replace Trout for the time being include Ryan Noda, Scott Kingery, and prospect Matthew Lugo who could be summoned to join Jo Adell and Taylor Ward in the Angels’ outfield. Switch-hitter Gustavo Campero could also see increased usage after serving as the club’s 4th outfielder to start the season.
The Angels continue their 4 game series vs. Detroit on Friday night in a game scheduled for a 6:38pm PDT first pitch.
