Taylor Hall, Hurricanes Agree to Three-Year Extension
Fresh off becoming the first team to advance to the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes announced Wednesday that they had signed forward Taylor Hall to a three-year contract extension.
The deal will pay Hall $3.167 million per season through the 2027-28 campaign, reaching a total of $9.5 million. It does not include any trade or roster move protections.
The 33-year-old is in the final season of a four-year, $24-million contract that he signed with the Boston Bruins ahead of the 2021 campaign and was previously set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Carolina acquired Hall as part of the blockbuster three-team trade for Mikko Rantanen – who was traded to the Dallas Stars in a separate deal after refusing to sign a long-term extension – involving the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks last January.
“Taylor has proven to be an outstanding fit for our team, and we are thrilled that he is excited to make Raleigh his home for another three seasons,” Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said via the club’s press release. “He’s been a solid veteran presence in the locker room and a difference-maker on the ice.”
Before joining the Hurricanes this season, Hall registered nine goals and 24 points across 46 games in his second (and final) season with the Blackhawks prior to being traded, averaging 14:59 minutes per night. He only appeared in 10 games during his inaugural campaign with the franchise after tearing the ACL in his right knee.
The former Hart Trophy winner played 31 regular-season contests after arriving in Carolina, scoring nine goals and 18 points while receiving a boost in playing time, earning 15:27 minutes per contest. This post-season, he owns one goal and three points through five games.
Hall, selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2010, played six seasons with the organization before being traded to the New Jersey Devils during the ‘16 off-season. He spent four seasons with the Devils, notching career-highs in goals (39) and points (93) in 2017-18.
The Calgary, Alberta, native split time between the then-Arizona Coyotes and Buffalo Sabres before arriving in Boston via trade during the shortened 2020-21 season. Over three seasons with the Bruins, the veteran winger posted 44 goals and 111 points across 158 games, hitting the 20-goal mark during his first full campaign with the franchise.
Playing in his 15th NHL season, Hall has racked up 284 goals and 739 points over 909 career games split between the Oilers, Devils, Coyotes, Sabres, Bruins, Blackhawks and Hurricanes.
If Hall remains healthy throughout most of his new three-year extension, he’d be on track to cross the celebrated 1,000-game threshold during Year 2 of the deal.
After defeating the Devils – one of Hall’s former clubs – in round one, the Hurricanes now await the winner of the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens series, which could end Wednesday night, as the Caps enter a pivotal Game 5 leading 3-1.
