Former NHL scout and longtime TSN 1200 on air personality Shawn Simpson has passed away at the age of 56 the station announced Thursday.
The Ottawa native enjoyed a solid OHL career with the Soo Greyhounds and Oshawa Generals, eventually being selected 60th overall by the Washington Capitals in 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Simpson would go on to play parts of 3 seasons with the Baltimore Skipjacks of the AHL before transitioning to a career in scouting & management with Washington & Toronto.
His passing comes as a shock to many in the Ottawa community, including former co-worker John Rodenburg at TSN who broke the news to listeners earlier today.
“We know that when you work on the radio, especially if you are a regular listener, you’re always considered to be family,” Rodenburg said.
“That’s what people love about radio, that’s what those of us who work in radio love about it is that we are considered by family of you. When you lose a member of your family, it shocks especially when it comes as it has.”
The Ottawa Senators also issued a statement on social media, saying “The Ottawa Senators were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Shawn Simpson, lionhearted member of the Sens media landscape and proud member of the Ottawa community.”
“Our hearts go out to his family and friends, as well as his fans whose lives he touched throughout his hockey and media career.”
Simpson had been open about his struggles with mental health over the years, and was a huge advocate for seeking out help to those who were wrestling with their own inner demons. His family sent thanks to the community for their outpouring of support but have also requested privacy during this difficult time.
