The home of Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin was reportedly broken into on January 11th in the Sewickley Heights area of Pennsylvania. According to reports, the burglary occurred around the time of puck drop between the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Amongst the items that were stolen were Malkin’s Stanley Cup rings which he won with Pittsburgh in 2009, 2016, and 2017. Police reports indicate that the Russian forward’s security system was somehow disabled at the time of the theft, leading some to wonder if there was someone connected to Malkin who was involved in some capacity.
“Malkin has requested that his privacy be respected during this time,” a statement from the Penguins organization read, “and we will have no further comment on the matter.”
The 38 year old is the latest high profile athlete to have his home robbed during one of their games, joining a growing list that includes Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Luka Doncic, Jaylen Brown, Mike Conley, and Bobby Portis in recent months.
Earlier last year Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin saw his home targeted as well. The rash of sophisticated burglaries has become so widespread that the FBI has now become involved and is urging all professional sports leagues to speak to their players about additional precautions around their homes.
The Allegheny County Police Department have yet to confirm whether the burglaries are connected or not, but are asking anyone who has information to call their tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.
Malkin returned to the ice for the first time since January 5th last night against the Seattle Kraken, registering an assist and a shot on goal in 17:37 of ice time. The 6’3″ forward had been sidelined with an upper body injury for the past 4 contests.
Pittsburgh is next in action on Friday, January 17th against the Buffalo Sabres.
