The Chicago Bulls have announced plans to retire former guard Derrick Rose’s number 1 jersey next season at a date to be announced later.
Rose, who is a Chicago native himself, joined the Bulls after being taken 1st overall in the 2008 NBA Draft. The talented point guard out of Memphis would go on to win rookie of the year, and then take home league MVP honours in 2011.
A 3x All-Star, Rose averaged 25pts/7.7ast/4.1reb/1stl per game in his MVP season with Chicago, helping guide the team to the number 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
The 36 year old had been public about what it would mean to him to see his jersey raised to the rafters in previous interviews. And though no other player has worn the number 1 since Rose was traded to the Knicks back in 2016.
“OFFICIAL: The Bulls will retire Derrick Rose’s number during the 2025-26 NBA season. No other player will ever wear the number 1 for the Chicago Bulls. Number 1 will always be from Chicago,” the team said in a social media post Saturday.
The Bulls have retired four numbers in franchise history: Jerry Sloan’s No. 4, Bob Love’s No. 10, Michael Jordan’s No. 23 and Scottie Pippen’s No. 33, while also hanging banners that honour former coach Phil Jackson and former GM Jerry Krause.
Details surrounding the ceremony will be released at a future date.
