Tyler Seguin To Undergo Hip Surgery

Stars’ Tyler Seguin Out 4-6 Months Due to Hip Surgery

Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin is set to miss four to six months because of a left hip injury that requires surgery, the club announced Wednesday.

The procedure, which is scheduled for Thursday in New York and will be performed by Dr. Bryan T. Kelly, is to repair an impingement and the labrum in Seguin’s left hip. It’s unclear if he’ll return to action this season.

Seguin underwent surgery on his right hip during the 2020-21 season, limiting the 32-year-old to only three games during the pandemic-shortened campaign. He also went under the knife for arthroscopic knee surgery that year.

The Brampton, ON native had been bothered by his left hip throughout this season, but he continued to play through the pain – just as he did during the 2020 bubble playoffs, helping lead Dallas to the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

This time around, Seguin logged 19 games, scoring nine goals and 20 points, before halting his 2024-25 campaign. He was off to an impressive start despite playing injured, producing at an 86-point pace in his 15th NHL season.

“It’s definitely going to be one of the most interesting years of my career I would say. Hopefully at the end of the day it’s with the big shiny thing at the end,” Seguin told reporters on Saturday, including NHL.com’s Taylor Baird, four days before the club announced he’d require hip surgery.

Since arriving in Dallas via trade from Boston ahead of the 2013-14 season, Seguin has been an integral component of the franchise’s competitive window, including seven playoff appearances – five in six seasons since 2018-19 – and consecutive Western Conference Final appearances.

In 12 seasons with the Stars, the second overall selection from ‘10 has tallied nine 20-goal seasons and five 30-goal campaigns, totalling 304 goals across 785 games. He also owns 687 points, the fifth-most in franchise history

Seguin was featured amongst the most productive lines in hockey this season, flanking the right wing alongside Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment. That trio had combined for 14 goals at five-on-five, tied for third-most league-wide, according to MoneyPuck

In Seguin’s absence, Logan Stankoven – who’s scored four goals and 15 points in 24 games during his second NHL season – is expected to join Duchene and Marchment on Dallas’ second line moving forward.

The six-time All-Star has three seasons remaining, including this current one, on his eight-year, $78.8-million contract. Since he’ll be sidelined indefinitely, the Stars will receive significant salary cap savings by transferring him to LTIR, given his $9.85-million cap hit.

Those savings could prove useful if the front office decides to acquire a top-six forward ahead of the March 7th trade deadline, addressing the massive void left by Seguin’s absence.

Dallas, which enters Wednesday’s slate third in the Central with 32 points, will continue its three-game road trip with a stop in Los Angeles against the Kings, followed by a matchup versus the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday before returning home.
