Add another name to the list of Jets staffers to be shown the door amidst their disappointing NFL campaign. New York announced Tuesday that they were relieving GM Joe Douglas of his duties following internal conversations between the front office and owner Woody Johnson.
Former Cleveland Browns GM Phil Savage has been tabbed as interim General Manager for the remainder of the season.
“Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the general manager of the New York Jets,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson in a statement. “I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward. Phil Savage will be the interim general manager for the remainder of the season. We will begin the process to identify a new general manager immediately.”
Douglas was in the final year of his contract, and was likely to be let go at season’s end. However, the firing allows New York to begin putting together their vision for their next GM earlier than some of their NFL rivals.
Losers of 6 of their last 7 contests, New York sports a 3-8 record heading into their bye week, well out of playoff contention in a season where hopes were as high as ever amongst the fanbase. Since Douglas joined New York in 2019, the team has gone 30-64 (.319 win percentage) under his guidance.
That mark is the 2nd worst in the NFL during that span trailing only the Carolina Panthers (27-66).
