The Arizona Cardinals have come to terms on a new 2 year extension for veteran running back James Conner the team announced Saturday.
The deal, which is worth $19M, will keep him in Arizona through the 2026 NFL campaign. The 29 year old back was set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and will see a sizeable pay raise from his $4.325M base salary he’s currently playing on.
Conner is currently averaging 4.2 yards per carry, with 705 yards and 5 TDs on the ground this season. The former Pitt Panther has also added 29 receptions for 288 yards through the air as well. His current production has him on pace for the 2nd 1,000 yard rushing season of his NFL career, both of which have come since joining the Cardinals.
As Conner goes, so do the Cards. In games where the soon to be 30 year old has reached 100 scrimmage yards, the club is 5-1. However, in games where he falls short of that mark, the team is 1-4. And in a division as tightly packed as the NFC West currently is (only 1 game separates worst from first), it’s clear that Arizona needs to keep Conner involved in the offence moving forward if they hope to reach the postseason for the first time since 2021.
The Cardinals travel to Minnesota to take on the Vikings in a 1pm ET Sunday showdown.
