Sun Part Ways With Head Coach Stephanie White

The offseason coaching carousel in the WNBA continued Monday as the Connecticut Sun announced they were parting ways with head coach Stephanie White after only 2 seasons.

The 2023 WNBA coach of the year posted a 55-25 record in Connecticut, guiding the team to postseason appearances during both her years on the sideline. With White’s departure, that now makes 7 franchises who are on the lookout for a new bench boss heading into 2025.

“It’s not an easy decision to leave Connecticut, but I think the best one for my family and my career,” White told ESPN after news of her departure broke. “It’s meant a lot to me — I’m so grateful to Jen and the organization. It’s a top-notch organization. For me to be able to return to coaching — which I didn’t know if it would be possible — with such a great team and coaching staff, it’s meant a lot to me.”

“So this has not been easy. But certainly, at the end of the day, it’s tough for me being away from my family. So from a professional standpoint and a personal standpoint, I feel like it’s the best decision.”

Both White and the Sun were quick to highlight that there was more to the decision than simply wins and losses, and that there were reasons beyond basketball for the change. However White remained mum on what the future may hold for her.

That being said, rumours began to swirl in the wake of the announcement that a potential move to Indiana, who currently have a head coaching vacancy of their own, could be in the cards. White and former Iowa standout Caitlin Clark have history, and the 47 year old is no stranger to the Fever either having been both a player and coach with the franchise previously.

While nothing has been confirmed as of yet, insiders believe that a White to Indiana reunion is a distinct possibility.
