Add yet another historic milestone to Caitlin Clark’s otherworldly rookie campaign, as the Indiana Fever guard broke Seimone Augustus’ rookie scoring record in her team’s 110-109 victory over the Dallas Wings Sunday.
Dropping a career high 35 points in the win, Clark now sits at 761 points across 39 WNBA games, besting Augustus’ previous high water mark of 744 set back in 2006.
Clark has been every bit as advertised in her first professional season, re-writing the league and rookie history books on seemingly a nightly basis. Already the former Iowa standout has notched the most assists in a single WNBA season (329), most career 25 point, 10 assist games (5), most points by a rookie (761), single game assist record (19), and currently sits just 8 three-pointers behind Sabrina Ionescu’s single season record of 128.
With the win, Indiana moves to 20-19 and have locked up the 6th seed for the WNBA playoffs. A guaranteed record of at least .500 or better is a stark improvement compared to the last few Fever seasons, where the club won only 18 games over their last 2 campaigns combined.
“Everybody is definitely excited for the playoffs,” Clark told reporters. “We’re not just happy to be there. We really feel like we can compete with every single team.”
Indiana is making their first postseason appearance since 2016, and will get their final tune up before the playoffs on Thursday against the Washington Mystics in a 7pm ET showdown.
Having hit 6 three-pointers against Dallas on Sunday, and having no seeding implications at play vs the 13-25 Mystics, one can expect that Clark will have the “green light” to fire away from beyond the arc as she attempts to add one final historic feat to her promising young career.
