The Dallas Cowboys are signing veteran running back Dalvin Cook his agents announced on Wednesday morning.
Cook, who most recently split time between the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens, is a 4x Pro Bowler who will add some much needed depth to an uncharacteristically thin Cowboys backfield. Dallas, which currently features Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle at RB, brought in the 29 year old for a workout this week and were impressed with what they saw.
Cook struggled to carve out a role for himself in either Baltimore or New York, rushing for a career low 214 yards and no TD’s over the course of 15 games. The former Minnesota Viking spent most of the offseason in 2023 rehabbing his shoulder following a surgical procedure, which may have caused his slow start.
That being said, there’s no guarantee that the former FSU standout will be able to regain his pre-injury form even with a fully healthy offseason. Nevertheless, given the stage of his career that Elliott finds himself in, and the unproven tack record of Dowdle, the signing is a relatively low risk, high reward move for the Cowboys front office.
With 4 straight 1,000+ yard seasons under his belt while in Minnesota, Cook will begin his Cowboys career on the practice squad familiarizing himself with the playbook before being activated to the NFL roster.
