Free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie has agreed to terms with the Mavericks on a 1 year deal, sending him back to Dallas where was part of the club’s 2022 Western Conference Finals run.
Across 76 games split between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers in 2023-24, Dinwiddie averaged 10.5pts/2.7reb/4.7ast across 28 minutes of action per night. However, the versatile guard saw his production jump to 17.1pts and 4.9ast per game when he had his first stint in Dallas as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade.
According to reports, the 31 year old was close to signing with the Mavericks after being bought out in February, but ultimately opted to join the Lakers. Once the offseason hit, Dinwiddie and the Mavs’ front office resumed discussions about a potential reunion, with talks gaining momentum over the last week.
While financial terms of the contract weren’t immediately disclosed, given the Mavericks current cap situation, its believed that Dinwiddie will be joining the club on the veteran minimum. Because of the team’s inability to offer much more than that, the 6’5″ native of Los Angeles initially explored the free agent market for a more lucrative long term deal, before circling back to join the Mavs.
Dinwiddie now joins a formidable backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, and will provide the Jason Kidd led squad with a viable scoring option off the bench to spell their two stars. Ironically, it was Irving whom Dinwiddie was traded for following the team’s 2022 playoff run which landed him in Brooklyn.
