The Montreal Canadiens have announced that head coach Martin St. Louis will be away from the team indefinitely for family related reasons.
While little is known regarding the nature of the absence, the club did indicate that assistant coach Trevor Letowski will assume head coaching duties during St. Louis’ absence. The announcement comes as the team prepares for a 5 game Western Conference road trip, kicking off Saturday in Calgary.
A cavalcade of well wishes poured in via social media following the announcement, as Canadiens fans rallied around their coach and his family during these uncertain times.
Montreal is currently 25-30-11 on the season, and sit 7th in the Atlantic Division. The Habs are 3-4-3 over their last 10, but have shown signs of improvement from their 2022-23 campaign. The club sold off several pieces at the NHL trade deadline, as they continue their ongoing rebuild around the likes of Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky.
The Habs are in action Saturday against the Calgary Flames, followed by stops in Edmonton, Vancouver, Seattle, and Colorado. The team will then return home for a March 28th showdown with the Philadelphia Flyers.
