For the 2nd time in the last 3 years, Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons has undergone back surgery to correct a recurring issue which has limited his availability.
Simmons underwent what is known as a “microscopic partial discectomy” Thursday at UHealth Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, FL. The procedure, which was performed by Dr. Timur Urakov, is expected to have the former number 1 pick ready for the start of the 2024-25 season, and will hopefully help his body hold up to the rigours of an 82 game schedule.
“Brooklyn Nets guard/forward Ben Simmons underwent a successful microscopic partial discectomy earlier today to alleviate the nerve impingement in his lower back,” the team said in a social media post. “Simmons is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp next season.”
Simmons’ injury history is extensive over the course of his short NBA career. After initially sitting out the entirety of the 2016-17 season with a foot injury, the 27 year old played in 160 out of a possible 164 games in his first two professional campaigns.
However, beginning in 2019-20, Simmons has seen his availability drop considerably as he battled recurring neck, and back injuries, along with mental health related break from the game. Simmons suited up for 57, 58, 0, 42, and 15 games for a total of 172 games over the last 5 seasons combined.
With one year, and $40.3M remaining on his contract, 2024-25 will be a monumental year for the former Rookie of the Year winner. If he’s able to put together another All-Star or All NBA defensive team worthy performance, he could be in line for another large pay day. However, should his injuries flare up again, there’s a possibility that he could be out of the league entirely by the conclusion of the 2025 campaign.
