Canadian basketball star Aaliyah Edwards took to social media Thursday to officially declare for the 2024 WNBA Draft.
The Kingston, ON native is currently averaging 17.8 points/9.3reb/2.1ast per game for the UConn Huskies, but wanted the focus to be on her team’s on court play, and not what the future holds for the talented forward.
“Let’s have one last dance,” Edwards said in Twitter video post. “In addition to one last dance, I will be officially declaring for the 2024 Draft. I’m prepared, but more importantly I’m ready for the next chapter. Canadian Mamba out.”
The 21 year old was named the Big East Most Improved Player in 2023, and was named a third team All-American. Edwards, who has worked with some of the top athletes in Ontario and been involved with representing Canada internationally as well, will turn pro following the season, and is widely expected to be a 1st round pick.
“Although got to savour every moment because this is my last jam at UConn, I’m all in, ready to bring that championship glory back to Storrs with my squad by my side.”
A three year starter at UConn, Edwards’ future was the subject of much discussion around campus after former top recruit Paige Bueckers announced she would be returning for another year at the school. Unlike Bueckers, who has dealt with a multitude of injuries during her time on campus, Edwards had little else to prove at the collegiate level, and should be one of the more intriguing WNBA prospects to watch this spring.
The third ranked Huskies open their 2024 NCAA tournament against the 14th seeded Jackson State Tigers on Saturday March 23rd at 1pm ET.
