The Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed forward Matthew Phillips off waivers amidst a rough stretch of injuries to their roster.
Phillips previously played for the Washington Capitals, recording 5 points (1G, 4A) across 27 contests with the Caps in 2023-24. A former 6th round selection by the Calgary Flames back in 2016, Phillips has appeared in 30 career NHL games across parts of 3 seasons.
The 25 year old has one year remaining on his contract which sees him earn an AAV of $775K per season.
Phillips has excelled at the AHL level where he’s accumulated 237 points (103G, 134A) in 265 games with the Stockton Heat and Calgary Wranglers. With the Penguins battling the injury bug of late, Phillips represents the 3rd waiver claim of the year for the club and could see regular playing time immediately upon arrival.
Pittsburgh is currently without forwards Jake Guentzel, Noel Acciari, Jansen Harkins and Matt Nieto as they attempt to chase down the Detroit Red Wings for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
After placing Guentzel on long term injured reserve Thursday, the Penguins promoted minor-league forwards Jonathan Gruden, Valterri Puustinen, and Vinnie Hinostroza to their NHL roster.
