The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent punter Matt Araiza the team announced on Thursday.
Araiza, who was a former 6th round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2022, is a San Diego State alum, but has never played a game in the NFL after being named as a defendant in a sexual assault case alleged to have taken place in 2021. The accuser, identified only as Jane Doe, dropped the 23 year old punter from the suit, clearing the way for his return to professional football.
“I am proud and honored to sign a contract with the Chiefs,” Araiza said in a statement released via his agent. “I am thrilled to be able to continue my NFL career. I want to thank my family, who have been my rock and my many friends who have been unwavering in their support. I am excited to begin the next phase of my career with the Super Bowl Champs!”
Previously known as “punt god” due to his booming kicks, Araiza was one of the most highly regarded special teasers coming out of college during the 2022 NFL Draft. Prior to signing with the Chiefs, the former Aztec was brought in for a workout with the New York Jets, but failed to come to terms on a deal.
As a result of the signing, Kansas City will be parting ways with former All-Pro punter Tommy Townsend this offseason. Townsend, 27, spent the last 4 seasons with KC, and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league calendar comes into effect.
“We are grateful to Brett Veach, coach Reid and the Chiefs organization for giving Matt this opportunity,” agent Joe Linta wrote on social media.
Prosecutors announced in December of 2022 that Araiza would not be charged. Araiza also agreed to dismiss his defamation countersuit against to alleged victim clearing the way for his return.
